Licensed or non-licensed asbestos work?

Some asbestos materials can be handled by a trained non-licensed contractor. Others need an HSE licence. The material decides, not the size of the job.

Licensed work

Sprayed coatings, pipe and boiler lagging and most insulating board are higher risk and generally need a contractor holding an HSE licence. The work is notified in advance and often needs a sealed enclosure.

Non-licensed work

Asbestos cement roofs and sheets, textured coatings in good condition and floor tiles are generally non-licensed, but still need training, controls and safe disposal.

Notifiable non-licensed work

Some non-licensed work has to be notified to the regulator and recorded. The contractor knows which.

How to check

Ask the contractor which category applies and to put it in the quote. For licensed work, ask for the HSE licence and check it.

Not sure which you have?

A sample or survey tells you. Start there if the material is unclear.
